The classic version of the route is 99.5% paved!
Stage 1: Warsaw – Sochocin (90 km)
The route first follows the Vistula, then to Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki along the service road next to national road 7. After crossing the Vistula you ride through picturesque Polish countryside. In Joniec you cross the Wkra river – there are several kayak rentals here. The stage ends in Sochocin.
Stage 2: Sochocin – Mława (70 km)
Beyond Sochocin lie charming rural areas with very little car traffic, so on long stretches you can ride side by side. After Glinojeck the route gets a bit winding, so keep an eye on the map. Once you cross national road 7, a straight road leads all the way to Mława through many small villages. In Mława you will find supermarkets, pubs and restaurants to rest after the ride.
Stage 3: Mława – Grunwald (60 km)
After leaving Mława the first small hills appear. After the turn in Iłowo-Osada the landscape becomes very scenic, with long sections through the forest. In places the road is quite intricate, so check the map or ask the friendly locals. As you approach Grunwald you will see the tall monument next to the famous battlefield from afar. There is a campsite in Grunwald; if you still have energy you can continue to Ostróda, but expect a very hilly road.
Stage 4: Grunwald – Ostróda (40 km)
The road to Ostróda is the most “mountainous” part of Zielona 7 – the biggest climbs come just before the town. The surface is not the best in some places, so riders on road bikes need a little patience; later the road is much better. It is worth reaching Ostróda early – you can spend many pleasant hours in local restaurants and attractions. You can also look for accommodation beyond Ostróda, e.g. around Lake Szeląg Wielki.
Stage 5: Ostróda – Elbląg (70 km)
After Ostróda you ride a long stretch of wide, smooth asphalt. There are smaller and bigger hills all the way, and you can cool off at one of several lakes. Both Morąg and Pasłęk are old Prussian towns with many interesting historic buildings. From Pasłęk to Elbląg the route follows the service road along national road 7.
Stage 6: Elbląg – Gdańsk (80 km)
From Elbląg the route leads through small villages and then turns towards Stegna, where you can take your first dip in the Baltic Sea! Further on it passes through Mikoszewo with its ferry crossing, and then over the drawbridge from Sobieszewo Island.
Take a souvenir photo with the “Gdańsk” sign – you can send it and other photos to zielona7.pl@gmail.com
You can modify Zielona 7 freely to suit your needs. The six stages above are an optimal plan for beginners. The whole route can just as well be ridden in three, two or even one day – a few brave riders have already done it!
